Why are we here? What is the meaning of life?<\/b>
\n<\/span>
\n<\/span>Those questions – and humanity\u2019s fascination with the cosmos – hearken back to our very origins. Since early history, depictions of what might exist in the canopy of stars abound in art, stories, and music.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In the world of symphonic music, one of the most famous and exciting explorations of these questions is Gustav Holst\u2019s beloved <\/span>The Planets<\/i><\/b>. Holst\u2019s masterwork captures our collective imagination, and has inspired composers since Holst began writing it in 1914. It has also influenced practically every sci-fi movie ever, and has spurred our imaginations to think of what might be out there, in the expanse of outer space.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Join your Bloomington Symphony Orchestra for\u00a0<\/span>Space Jams<\/b>, a cosmic celebration featuring Holst\u2019s beloved masterpiece in its full, expanded, original instrumentation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

2 performances available<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

  1. 3:00-4:00pm – Matinee performance:<\/b> Holst\u2019s <\/span>The Planets<\/span><\/i> (60 minutes, no intermission)<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. 7:00-8:45pm – Expanded evening performance:<\/b> IN addition to <\/span>The Planets<\/span><\/i>, you will hear <\/span>Cycles<\/span><\/i> by local film composer Zachary Walter (<\/span>The Good Catholic<\/span><\/i>, <\/span>Ms. White Light<\/span><\/i>) which will set the mood for our interstellar voyage. A collaboration with local choir Voces Novae will share stellar music such as \u0112rik E\u0161envalds <\/span>Stars<\/span><\/i> and Lauren Bernofsky\u2019s <\/span>O Cosmos<\/span><\/i>. This later show also includes a<\/span> sci-fi costume contest<\/b> (come dressed as your favorite sci-fi character!), space-themed visuals to accompany the music, and more!\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
