Music Director Ryo Hasegawa stepping down at end of this season

Dear Bloomington Community,

I am writing to share that I will be stepping down as Music Director of the Bloomington Symphony Orchestra at the conclusion of this season. This was not an easy decision, but I believe it is the right moment for both myself and the organization as we look toward the future. The past two years with the BSO have been a deeply meaningful chapter in my life, and I make this decision with both gratitude and a touch of sadness, wishing I could continue making music with this remarkable community for a few more seasons.

Sharing music with Bloomington has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my career. I am incredibly proud of what the orchestra and community have achieved together — from powerful performances like Sibelius 2 and Banfield’s Symphony, to collaborations with local partners, to the artistic risks and growth that have defined our time. Each concert has affirmed what I felt from the beginning: Bloomington is a community filled with passion, curiosity, and a genuine love for the arts.

Your support, enthusiasm, and commitment to live music have inspired me deeply. I will always remember the energy you bring to our concerts, the pride you take in your hometown orchestra, and the strong sense of togetherness that makes Bloomington such a special place to make music.

As we move into this final part of the season, I am fully committed to making it a joyful and meaningful celebration of all we have built together. We still have exciting concerts ahead — including our first-ever performance of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony at the MAC — and I will do everything I can to support a smooth transition as the BSO looks ahead to an exciting new chapter.

Thank you for your trust, support, and welcoming spirit. It has been an honor to make music for you and with you, and to share in the artistic life of this wonderful community.

With heartfelt gratitude,

Ryo
