SUMMARY:"Simply Brilliant" - A Free Performance of Hansel and Gretel April 5\, 2025
DESCRIPTION:Timothy McShea of the Johns Hopkins News-Letter called Nicholas Hersh‘s adaptation of Hansel and Gretel “absolutely flawless.” \n“The classical vocal performances paired with heavy jungle beats and jazz solos created a clash of musical traditions that seemed so outrageous on paper yet absolutely thrived onstage. The more quirky\, whimsical performance of the singers\, with their bizarre facial expressions and direct communications with the audience\, felt right at home with the wild yet controlled nature of the musicians. The musical adaptation [of the original opera by Englebert Humperdinck] by Nicholas Hersh was simply brilliant.” \nDon’t miss your chance to experience this magical retelling of the classic fairy tale in a FREE concert! The Bloomington Symphony Orchestra is partnering with Reimagining Opera For Kids to present this 45 minute program at the Monroe County Public Library Auditorium (downtown) for 2 perfomances:\nThursday\, April 3\, 2025 at 5:30 pm\nSaturday\, April 5\, 2025 at 11:00 am \nThis performance is made possible by a generous grant from the Bloomington Arts Commission. \nFREE for all ages\, donations accepted.

SUMMARY:Un Voyage Français - concert at BCT
DESCRIPTION:Purchase Tickets Here \n  \n  \nOur season finale takes us on an emotionally-charged tour of Paris. From Lili Boulanger’s tragic\, intimate musings on her own small world to the grandiose excesses of Berlioz’s exploration of obsessive love\, this will be a program to remember! \nLili Boulanger is often overlooked compared to her better-known sister\, Nadia\, however she was also a groundbreaking composer in her own right. D’un soir triste (Of a Sad Evening) is shrouded in dark orchestral colors and pushes the boundaries of conventional harmonies for its time. This personal and expressive sonic exploration was completed only a few months before Lili died at the young age of 24. \nThe shocking originality of Berlioz’s Symphonie fantastique goes well beyond the programmatic to enter the realm of the psychological. Its exploration of an unstable\, drug-addled mind spills into hallucinations\, and is both disturbing and innervating. \nTo help our audience explore this program in more depth\, we’ve chosen to include some extra-musical elements to our performance\, including – \n– Collaborations with local spoken word performers to give voice to both Berlioz and his beloved Harriet Smithson\n– An interactive Listening Guide where musicologists and members of the orchestra provide insights into Berlioz’s masterwork\n– Slideshows during each piece to evoke the shifting sentiments/mood brought forth by the composer\n– The use of onstage props to highlight exceptional moments in each piece \nWe hope you’ll join us for this very special\, thought-provoking program. The length of these pieces and the added features mean this concert will run a little over 2 hours\, so please plan accordingly. \nProgram:\nSymphonie fantastique – Hector Berlioz\nD’un soir triste – Lili Boulanger \n  \nTickets: $25 Adults\, $12 Students\, Free for 18 & under \nClick here to purchase tickets for this concert\, or you can reserve your seats at: \nBCT Bloom Box Office\n114 E. SUMMARY:New Date - BSO Chamber Conversations with AAAMC
DESCRIPTION:  \nAre you ready to return to the Archives? \nLast fall\, the BSO partnered with the Archives of African American Music and Culture (AAAMC) to bring you an unforgettable collaboration. And now\, we will return to the archives for another exciting journey into America’s musical heritage – both past and present. Audiences will hear works by some familiar figures\, such as late jazz legend (and beloved IU faculty member) David Baker. And if you came to our “Imagine: Collaboration” concert last fall\, you will recognize more music by jazz pianist and composer\, Mickey Tucker. \nThis is also a rare opportunity to learn more about some truly fantastic music that will likely be unfamiliar to many people. The programmed works range from those that have been recorded and performed (Undine Smith Moore’s “Afro American Suite for Piano\, Cello and Flute” and Mickey Tucker’s “Blues for Khalid”) to those that have never been published\, including handwritten manuscripts from the archives (Moore’s “Andante for Strings” and Charles Coleman’s “Duo for Two Violins”).\nSo please join us\, as we return to the archives to enjoy the music of David Baker\, Mickey Tucker\, Undine Smith Moore\, Carl MaultsBy\, and Charles Coleman. An extra dimension of learning and discovery will be provided by Mia Watts\, Head of Collections at the AAAMC\, who will provide commentary and context for these works throughout the concert. \nThe concert starts at 7pm on Wednesday\, Januray 17\, at First United Church. This unique musical experience is free for all audience members\, although donations of any amount are welcome and appreciated. \n  \nThis concert is part of the ongoing collaboration with the Bloomington Symphony Orchestra and the Archives of African American Music and Culture. \n\nThis concert was rescheduled from September 20\, 2023 to January 17\, 2024.

Come be a part of history as the man who started it all returns to conduct the orchestra he founded in 1969! With guest conductors Geoffrey Simon and Isaac Terceros. \nThe 4:30 pre-concert talk\, led by musicologist Dr. Alexis Witt\, will focus on how the theme of “legacy” applies to each composer on the concert program — Brahms grappling with the legacy of Beethoven’s symphonies and choosing to write his orchestral serenades first as a sort of test-run for a symphony; Rachmaninoff heartbroken over how the Soviets destroy the legacy of the Russia he loved causing him to focus on his piano performance rather than composition; Havyrlets dying on day three of the current Russian invasion of Ukraine because she couldn’t receive medical attention and the legacy of Ukrainian music in the face of Russian erasure; Kodály’s interest in collecting Hungarian folk music to preserve the musical legacy of his homeland \n\nTickets\nAdult: $25\nStudent w/ID $12\nChildren 18 and under: FREE \nBuy your Legacy tickets here\nor at the Buskirk-Chumley Theater box office\, 114 E Kirkwood Ave\, Bloomington

Ignas’s impressive biography boasts numerous awards and prizes\, such as “The Queen’s Commendation for Excellence” (the highest-scoring graduate of the Royal Academy of Music\, July 2021)\, First Prize at the XIX Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition for Youth in Szafarnia\, First Prize at the XX Piano Competition “Young Virtuoso” in Zagreb\, Third Prize at the Aarhus Piano Competition and\, in 2021\, he was the semi-finalist of the Vendome Prize. Ignas has also appeared with orchestras all over the world\, playing everything from Mozart to Chopin. \nDuring his visit to Bloomington\, Ignas has generously offered his time and expertise to lead a masterclass\, coaching young pianists who will receive world-class feedback on their playing. Selected applicants will get to play for Ignas and then receive his help in areas of technique\, expression\, and musicality. This  is a rare opportunity for young performers to learn from a highly-accomplished professional performer who will only be in Bloomington for a short time! \nThe BSO welcomes all interested local (Bloomington and surrounding area) middle- and high-school piano students to apply. Applicants must submit a roughly one-minute video (in any format\, even cell phone video is fine!) of them playing either piano or keyboard. For the application you can play anything you would like – something from a piece you’ve mastered\, a piece you are working on\, or something that you aspire to play! If you are selected\, you will be asked to bring any Classical or non-Classical piece on which you would like to receive Maestro Maknickas’s feedback to a public masterclass held on Friday\, March 3rd\, from 4:30-6:30pm at the Faith Lutheran Church Sanctuary (2200 S. High Street). Selected participants will each get 10-20 minutes of one-on-one time to work exclusively with the maestro himself. This masterclass is FREE and open to the public: parents\, friends\, any interested pianists\, BSO superfans\, or lovers of music are welcome to attend as audience members\, with the request that all attendees be quiet and respectful of the students in the class. \nApplications are due by February 24th\, and we will send details to participants by February 27th. \nAre you (or someone you know) interested in the opportunity to be part of this exciting masterclass? SUMMARY:Conversations at FAR: A BSO Chamber Concert
DESCRIPTION:FAR Center for Contemporary Art\nTickets: Adults $12\, under 18 FREE\nBuy tickets at the door\, or save time and pay ahead: BUY TICKETS HERE\n\n  \n\n\n\nOn January 19th\, 7pm\, a BSO Chamber concert will premier Gabriel Lubell’s recently finished piece “Nils Magis Mirandum: Industrial Landscape no. 1” at FAR Center for Contemporary Art. The nonet has 5 movements and each movement depicts a different piece of water infrastructure: the water reclamation wetlands for Melbourne\, an ancient step well India\, aeration fountains in NY\, the oldest continuously working steam pump in the Netherlands\, and water towers in West Africa that gather water from the air.  It is a complex and exciting piece.  Here are some of Gabriel’s words about his process. \n\n\n“As urban society has blossomed\, it has had to confront a morass of challenges: too much water\, too little\, too dirty\, etc. Some solutions have been more elegant and effective than others. Yet all invite a kind of wonder: how does it all work? I find the question all the more poignant against the backdrop of mystery that shades much modern infrastructure. Most facilities are off-limits to the public\, and an awful lot is entirely invisible. What can be seen suggests entire fantasy worlds and mythologies; just how many alligators\, giant goldfish\, or (with gratitude to the X-Files) mutant fluke men live in the sewers? More seriously\, how many lives and hours were given to let our faucets flow? And what goes on in places where they do not?……I wanted to write music that might do some good for the planet\, but didn’t distress people by merely illuminating already known issues. Water infrastructure presented a powerful topic in this regard: as Matthew Gandy put it\, “water lies at the intersection of landscape and infrastructure\, crossing between visible and invisible domains.” Musicalizing its works could therefore provide oblique (and some direct) reminders of our increasingly troubled relationship to the natural world without succumbing to fearmongering or preachiness. At the same time\, it could celebrate the wonderous ingenuity that lies behind our lives\, create emotional connections to the inanimate mediators of our lifeblood\, and encourage new ideas about futures\, pasts\, and places both hidden and awesome.”\n\n\nPersonnel: \nKit Boulding\, violin\n\nEsteban Hernandez Parra\, viola\nScott Sgueglia\, cello\nRon Kadish\, bass\nEric Bowling\, flute\nBritta Goetz\, oboe\nCatherine Marchese\, bassoon\nCarl Weinberg\, clarinet\nChristina Blahovich\, french horn

SUMMARY:Jazzin' Btown - Imagine: Collaboration - Jazz\, Sax\, and Sibelius
DESCRIPTION:BSO and AAAMC present:\nImagine: Collaboration\nSunday\, October 23\, 2022\nBuskirk-Chumley Theater\, 6pmMickey Tucker’s Spiritual Collage: A Suite for Saxophone Quartet and Orchestra\nNkieru Okoye’s Voices Shouting Out\nJean Sibelius’ Violin Concerto – Elson Koh\, violin\, 2022 BSO Youth Concerto Competition Winner\n\nCLICK HERE TO BUY YOUR TICKETS FOR IMAGINE: COLLABORATION\n($25 adults\, $12 students\, FREE ages 18 and under) \nOR GET A BSO SEASON PASS TO SAVE OVER 12% OFF FULL PRICE!\n \nIndiana University’s Archives of African American Music and Culture (AAAMC) and the Bloomington Symphony Orchestra (BSO) are making musical history. In 1978\, African American jazz pianist and composer Mickey Tucker received the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) grant to compose what he calls his magnum opus\, Spiritual Collage: A Suite for Saxophone Quartet and Orchestra. Inspired by the Negro spiritual\, “I’ve Just Come from the Fountain\,” this work was written for a seventy-piece orchestra innovatively merging classical and jazz musical traditions. While the NEA grant supported composition and part printing processes\, it unfortunately did not fund a culminating performance. As a result\, Tucker stored this masterpiece in his home for forty-plus years\, where it would seemingly never be heard by anyone. Speaking with AAAMC Director Dr. Tyron Cooper\, the eighty-one-year-old composer lamented\, “I don’t think I will ever hear this piece performed in my lifetime.” In 2021\, Tucker and his wife Sheila donated the only hand-written copy of Spiritual Collage\, along with numerous original musical scores\, manuscripts\, photos\, letters\, audio and video recordings and other materials\, establishing the Mickey Tucker collection at AAAMC. Then\, Cooper in collaboration with the BSO’s Artistic Director and Conductor Alejandro Gómez Guillén\, formed a partnership between their respective organizations to normalize musical works by Black composers in Bloomington Symphony Orchestra’s concert seasons\, where recently BSO has presented the Indiana premiere of Florence Price’s Symphony no. 4\, and Dawn Norfleet’s Seed. In keeping with this vision\, the BSO will present the world premiere of Tucker’s Spiritual Collage at the Buskirk Chumley Theater on Sunday\, October 23rd at 6pm EDT. \nJoining the BSO is a lineup of internationally acclaimed jazz greats including pianist Cyrus Chestnut\, bassist Avery Sharpe\, drummer Ronnie Burrage with saxophonists Gary Bartz\, Greg Osby\, Carol Sudhalter\, and Indianapolis native Rob Dixon. The audience will have an opportunity to meet Mickey and Sheila\, as they both join via live stream from their home in Australia. This live performance will be recorded for the award-winning documentary series AAAMC Speaks\, which brings AAAMC collections alive through episodes highlighting performers\, scholars and industry executives who intersect with the archives’ holdings. \nIn addition to Tucker’s piece\, other works and artists will be showcased\, such as Voices Shouting Out by African American composer Okoye Nkeiru\, and the BSO 2022 Youth Concerto Competition winner\, Elson Koh\, performing Jean Sibelius’s Violin Concerto in D Minor\, Op. 47. This concert is co-sponsored by IU’s Office of the Provost\, the City of Bloomington\, the Indiana Arts Commission\, IU’s Platform Arts and Humanities Laboratory\, and IU’s College Arts and Humanities Institute. \n\nBuy your Collaboration tickets here.\n\nIndividual concerts:\n\nAdult: $25\nStudent w/ID $12\nChildren 18 and under: Free\n\n\n\nOr get all 4 BSO season tickets now! \n  \n\n\n  \n~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ \nAlso join us for “Engage the Artists” (Saturday\, October 22\, 2022—FAR Center for Contemporary Arts\, 6pm)\nFREE\, Space Limited. RSVP here. Reservations appreciated by not required \nOn Saturday\, October 22 (6pm-8:30pm) at Bloomington’s FAR Center\, the Bloomington community will have an opportunity to “meet the artists.” Moderated by the Director of Indiana University’s Archives of African American Music and Culture Dr. Tyron Cooper\, nationally and internationally acclaimed jazz musicians Greg Osby\, Cyrus Chestnut\, Gary Bartz\, Ronnie Burrage\, Carol Sudhalter\, Avery G. Sharpe\, and Rob Dixon will discuss their backgrounds and careers\, provide a brief masterclass\, and enjoy a community jam session. This event will be FREE and open to the public (space is limited). Musicians who would like to participate in the masterclass and/or jam session will be able to sign up at the door\, which opens at 5:30pm. This event is co-sponsored by IU’s Office of the Provost\, FAR Center\, and the City of Bloomington. \n\n\nJazzin’ B-Town: Discovery Through Music is the umbrella concept for events on October 22nd and 23rd dedicated to fostering meaningful exchange between jazz and classical music traditions as well as Indiana University Bloomington and broader community artists. The above two events will be offered in line with this significant initiative\, which stems from a recent partnership between IU’s Archives of African American Music and Culture and the Bloomington Symphony Orchestra.
