SUMMARY:Made in America
DESCRIPTION:Join the BSO for a celebration of music made in the U.S.A. \nCopland’s Fanfare for the Common Man is a different sort of anthem. Composer Terence Blanchard says “Whenever I hear it\, it stops me in my tracks and makes me reflect on the goodness of man. And I know that sounds corny for some\, but it really makes me think about how\, at the end of the day\, most people in this country are good people. Honestly\, that could have been our national anthem.” \nAlso on the program\, Copland’s Appalachian Spring is iconic American music\, deeply embedded and embraced in our culture. Our performance will be of the original chamber version\, showcasing the talents of our core musicians. \nEver since its spectacular premiere in December 1893\, Dvořák’s New World Symphony has remained one of the most beloved works of the symphonic repertoire. Dvořák’s tribute to his newly adopted country is powerful yet sentimental\, filled with a sweet longing for the promise of a better life. \nTickets\nTickets are available online or at the BCT Box Office\, 114 E. Kirkwood Avenue. \nGeneral admission: $15 advance\, $18 day of show\nStudent with ID: $8 advance\, $10 day of show\nChildren 18 & under: free (ticket required) \nSEASON tickets are now available. DESCRIPTION:To celebrate the diversity of music-making in the Bloomington community\, the Bloomington Symphony Orchestra (BSO) is seeking scores to perform in its 2018-19 season. \nThree winners will be announced: two winners for orchestral works (School Division and Community Division) and another for chamber work (Chamber Division). Composers can submit to more than one division but will only be eligible to win one. Works must be original and unpublished but may have been performed before. \n\n\n\nEligibility:\n\nSchool Division (7th-12th grade & IU undergraduates): Open to grade 7-12 students residing in the counties served by MCCSC\, as well as undergraduates enrolled in Jacobs School of Music courses in the current year.\nCommunity Division (IU graduate students & community members): Open to graduate students enrolled in the Jacobs School of Music as well as community-based composers residing in Monroe or adjacent counties.\nChamber Division (all ages): Open to all composers. Composers submit chamber pieces\, for up to eight players\, for performances in smaller venues across Bloomington.\n\n\n\n\n\nEntry fee: No entry fee\, though the winning composers are responsible for printing a score and parts if they are selected. \nInstrumentation: 2222/4231/timp+2perc/str for orchestral works. Any combination of eight orchestral instruments for chamber submissions. \nSelection process: Our panel is made up of BSO’s Artistic Director Alejandro Gómez Guillén\, BSO Vice President Eric Lindsay\, as well as other music-makers in the Bloomington community. The winning pieces will be determined based on their artistic merit as well as their level of difficulty being appropriate for a community orchestra. \nPrizes: A winning piece from each division will be performed in the BSO 2018-19 season. BSO reserves the right to declare that a winner does not exist if the entry requirements and musical standards are not fulfilled. Should the winning composition be published\, it must carry the designation: Winner\, 2018 Bloomington Symphony Orchestra Competition on score. All royalties will remain the sole property of the composer. \nSubmit application\, recording (MIDI’s OK) and PDF of the score through our online form by June 15\, 2018. To ensure equity\, composers must use a pseudonym on the score and recording. \nDeadlines: \nMay 2\, 2018 – Contest announced at BSO Spring Gala \nJune 15\, 2018 – Scores and Applications due (submit through our online form) \nJuly 13\, 2018 – Winners announced \nAugust 17\, 2018 – Winning composers submit hard-copy score & parts to Bloomington Symphony Orchestra \nP.O.
