All BSO musicians volunteer their time and musical talents to perform in Bloomington’s official community orchestra. Many players are professional musicians or music educators, while others work full-time in non-music related occupations. We strive for excellence in playing great music while building lasting friendships and enriching our community.
We welcome new players at any point in the season if there is an opening in the section. Any musician who would like to play in the orchestra must pass an informal audition to be held by the music director or, in some cases, a designated section leader.
If a playing position is unavailable, an applicant will be placed on the substitute list and will be notified immediately if an appropriate position is vacated. Please contact BSO Personnel Manager Cynthia Stacy to arrange an audition.
The Player Commitment
As Bloomington’s official community orchestra, we attract an audience ranging from interested adults and youngsters to appreciative professional musicians. In meeting their dual roles as musicians and members of the community, BSO players are expected to make a firm commitment to the rehearsal and concert schedule and to put forth the effort needed to achieve excellence in performance.
Rehearsals are held each Tuesday evening from 7:00 – 9:15 PM (usually in the Bloomington High School South band room.) Dress rehearsals will be scheduled in conjunction with the performance date. Sectionals may be called by the section leader as required.
